Recently we worked with one of our customers to migrate 30 Linux servers from AWS to Azure. As per the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.liainfraservices.com\/azure-cloud-migration-services\"><strong><span class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\">Azure cloud migration<\/span><\/strong><\/a> assessment process, we identified the Linux servers are a part of Nitro instances into <a href=\"https:\/\/www.liainfraservices.com\/aws-cloud-migration-services\">AWS<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nitro instances are a great offering from AWS. Which provides enhanced networking capabilities to the server(Instance). It has its own specific drivers for networking as well as storage blocks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We would give a short description of how to migrate servers from AWS to Azure and  AWS  to azure <a href=\"https:\/\/www.liainfraservices.com\/blog\/cloud-migration-challenges\/\">migration challenges<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.liainfraservices.com\/azure-cloud-migration-services\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"729\" height=\"91\" src=\"https:\/\/www.liainfraservices.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/To-know-more-about-Azure-Cloud-Migration-Services-2.jpg\" alt=\"AWS to Azure Cloud Migration Errors - know more\" class=\"wp-image-2640\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.liainfraservices.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/To-know-more-about-Azure-Cloud-Migration-Services-2.jpg 729w, https:\/\/www.liainfraservices.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/To-know-more-about-Azure-Cloud-Migration-Services-2-300x37.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 729px) 100vw, 729px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">AWS  to Azure migration step by step includes:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.liainfraservices.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/AWS_to_Azure_migration_steps.png\" alt=\"The steps described how to migrate servers from on-premises to the public cloud.\" class=\"wp-image-1468\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The assessment process<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The Discovery&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Modelling the target VM as per the production server information<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Data transfer from AWS to Azure cloud<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Inserting all the necessary drivers to support the Azure cloud<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Booting the target server&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Monitor the performance and ensures the network drivers loads correctly.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>ssh or RDP to the target VM<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Send the server to the customer for UAT.<\/li><\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We started the POC process to discover the production server and proceed with the migration. The Azure migration started from AWS.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is a process where we call the target cloud Azure via API to create a disk partition on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.liainfraservices.com\/vmware-cloud-migration-services\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\">target VM<\/span><\/a> so that the next step of data transfer can be started.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The target disk partition for Azure failed with an error<strong> &#8220;Error making partition number&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We had a troubleshooting session. Thus the cloud migration of a Nitro instance from AWS to Azure is failing with errors because of the device structure on AWS.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Linux server on AWS has its EBS volume for Nitro instances. Hence the EBS volumes are exposed as NVMe block devices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The device name is identified as \/dev\/nvme0n1 instead of \/dev\/sda1<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">There are certain AWS AMI who has to prebuild NMVE device drivers.<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Amazon Linux 2<\/li><li>Amazon Linux AMI 2018.03<\/li><li>Ubuntu 14.04 or later<\/li><li>Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7.4 or later<\/li><li>SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 12 SP2 or later<\/li><li>CentOS 7 or later<\/li><li>FreeBSD 11.1 or later<br><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When the Linux servers from Nitro instances are migrating into Azure, the cloud migration tool or the cloud migration team should be intelligent enough to&nbsp;convert the production server storage device to the standard device structure as \/dev\/sda1. Therefore these conversions of devices should be into the migration JSON file.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As a result, the target VM see the structure and the disk partition call via API to be made into Azure.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At <span class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.liainfraservices.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Lia Infraservices<\/a><\/span>, we perform some manual workaround and made the changes into the migration JSON and started the migration with changed device partitions.
