Let’s see the 7 steps to followed before moving into Cloud Migration. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Moving a server and its data from an in-house data centre or from a cloud to a different cloud seems very interesting. But if that is not done with proper planning or strategy, the end result can be very stressful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We are experiencing more and more enterprises migrating their servers into the cloud and the allocation of company IT budgets is increased to cloud adoption.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cloud migration<\/span><\/strong><\/a> can go wrong anytime, during its transition or the poor planning of existing backup schedules, windows automated updates and its scheduled reboots, there are many similarities to this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To have a successful cloud migration, few points need to be followed and that needs to be communicated with the team who is part of the cloud migration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The cloud migration can be an AWS cloud migration or an Azure cloud migration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

7 steps to be maintained before doing a production Cloud Migration.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

1. Network connectivity<\/strong>:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Ensure the network is configured correctly to have the proper connection between the Target instance\/VM and the source instance\/VM. This is essential as data transfer between the source and the target happen over the network and if the network is not consistent, the connection between the source & target needs to be consistent to ensure the successful data collection within a defined time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

a. \tOur cloud migration mechanism retries the connection for a period of time and it waits for the connection to re-establish again and it resumes the data collection. But this adds the additional time to complete the migration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. Source production server<\/strong>: <\/h3>\n\n\n\n

If there is any filter or policy applied into the source security to prevent the remote administration, the cloud migration of that source can be a challenge, If there is any AntiVirus which is enabled on the source, this also prevents the migration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

a. \tIf the source server has very less space on the system & boot volume, this can cause an issue while the cloned server boots into the target cloud due to lack of free space to support the booting process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

b. \tIf there is any Data Base application running on the source, the VSS Shadow storage needs to be updated as \u201cNo Limit\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

c. \tFor Linux based source production server if there is any IPTables for incoming connections, this needs to be disabled or configured correctly, else the login process of the clone VM on target would be difficult.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

d. \tIf there is a hardcoded DNS entry enabled then the cloned VM will not be able to communicate with the internet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. Legacy application<\/strong>: <\/h3>\n\n\n\n

If the application needs a special server configuration and its driver set, the target cloud have their own driver set to function based on their underlying hypervisor. So, it may be necessary to check before if that application would be working with those drivers and infrastructure on the target cloud.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

4. POC<\/strong>:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Proof of Concept is necessary to ensure the measurement of migration to the target cloud and its related complexity so that it gets addressed before starting up the actual production migration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

5. Cloud Migration Tool<\/strong>: <\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Cloud migration tools are necessary to have an automated process to migrate the workloads into the cloud and it provides the support of any migration-related issues, which gives the confidence of being back up by the experts into the migration project. So if any issue comes in during the phase of migration, that gets addressed immediately by the migration tool provider.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

6. All Team Together<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Migration of a server means, it needs to monitored by all team like Source server administrator, network administrator, Change management team who should approve any necessary change immediately to pace up the migration process, Security team to ensure the firewall is configured correctly & the migration team needs to continuously update the status of migration to the stakeholders which reduce the stress and ease the process of migration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

7.    Target Cloud Knowledge<\/strong>:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

If the internal IT team is not knowledgeable enough to set up the target cloud properly, that can cause the cloud migration a failure. The target cloud provider may have separate components starting from server to the underlying network driver which may directly impact the server on the target cloud once it boots into the target cloud. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are few limitations of all the target cloud which needs to be known before migrating a server into the target cloud, for example, if the source server boots from a GPT partition with UEFI based technology, the target cloud like AWS & Azure does not boot from UEFI.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
